Tunstall's housing comes in two very different shapes, often within a few streets of each other. Cooling and shoulder-season comfort is the honest reason people call, not replacing a boiler, so the choice is driven by the room rather than by a plant strategy. A bedroom wants quiet running at night. A through lounge often needs more capacity than its floor area suggests, because it is glazed at both ends. A wall-mounted split covers most rooms, a multi-split runs two or three indoor units off one outdoor unit, and a slim ducted unit suits a loft room where a wall box would look wrong. This is where Tunstall gets specific. The older terraces here have solid brick front and back, party walls left and right, and a rear yard reached through a shared entry, so the condenser position, the core drill line and the condensate fall all get agreed on site rather than assumed. We keep refrigerant runs short, use trunking where pipework is visible, and take the drain to a sensible discharge point instead of letting it weep down brickwork. On the newer estates it is usually simpler: a clear side elevation and a cavity to core through.

The Victorian terraces around the town centre are nine-inch solid brick with no cavity, narrow in plan, with a small yard off a shared entry. Perfectly workable. It simply needs the condenser position, the wall-bracket or ground-feet decision and the drain route settled at survey stage rather than on fitting day.
Little Chell, the St Michael's Road area between Pitts Hill and Great Chell, and the newer streets off Clanway Street are largely cavity-built semis and short terraces with a usable side elevation. Out on the edges of the town there is a good deal of modern, cavity-walled, double-glazed property. Second-floor bedrooms and rooms in the roof, particularly up on the Goldenhill ridge, heat up early and stay hot into the evening. A high-level indoor unit, a condenser on a wall bracket at first-floor level and a gravity condensate run are normal here. Where the fall is not available, a small condensate pump goes in rather than forcing the pipework.

The real questions are where the outdoor unit sits in a tight yard reached through a shared entry, whether it goes on a wall bracket or on ground feet, and where the condensate discharges. All three get settled at the survey rather than on the day.
It does not rule it out, but it changes the design. Tunstall has three conservation areas: Tower Square and the town-centre streets around it; Park Terrace, covering Park Terrace, Greengates Street, Salisbury Street, Hunt Street and their neighbours; and Victoria Park. Article 4 directions are in force across a number of the city's conservation areas, which removes permitted development rights that would otherwise apply and means planning permission has to be applied for where it normally would not. There are also a number of listed buildings in and around the town centre, including the Clock Tower, the Town Hall and the market hall. We survey with that in mind, keep outdoor units and visible pipework off principal elevations where we can, and will tell you when you should speak to Stoke-on-Trent City Council first.
