Why Book Your Air Conditioning Service Before Winter

For most of the year your air conditioning has quietly cooled homes and offices across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. But from October through to March the same units are asked to do the opposite job: pull warmth out of cold outdoor air and push it inside. That is a very different, and far harder, demand on the equipment.

A unit that sailed through summer on cooling alone can still stumble the first time it runs flat out in heating mode on a frosty morning. Booking a service now, before the cold sets in, is the simplest way to catch a small fault before it becomes a no-heat call-out in January.

Your air conditioner is also your winter heating

Every unit we fit is a reverse-cycle heat pump. It delivers heating down to around -15 degrees C outside with a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of roughly 3.5 to 4.5, meaning about 3.5 to 4.5 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity it draws. At current electricity and gas unit rates, that makes it cheaper to run than a gas boiler in most homes.

Those figures, though, assume the unit is clean, correctly charged and working exactly as designed. A neglected system heats less efficiently and has to work harder to reach the same temperature, drawing more power just when you are relying on it most. A pre-winter service is what keeps the real-world performance close to those numbers.

What hard heating-mode use demands

In heating mode the outdoor coil runs colder than the air around it, so frost builds up on it. The system periodically reverses for a minute or two to melt that frost away, a defrost cycle, then switches back to heating. A healthy unit does this cleanly and briefly. A unit with a dirty coil, low refrigerant or a struggling fan defrosts far more often, wastes energy and can leave you feeling as though the heating keeps cutting out.

All that melted frost then has to drain away. If the condensate drain is partly blocked or poorly routed, that water can freeze around the outdoor unit in cold weather, back up and trip the system out. The outdoor coil, fan and drain take the brunt of winter running, so they are exactly what a seasonal check needs to focus on.

What a service actually covers

A proper service visit is far more than a quick filter clean. On a typical residential visit, usually around £45 for a single unit, an F-Gas registered engineer will work through the whole system:

• Clean or replace the filters and check airflow
• Inspect and clean the indoor and outdoor coils
• Check refrigerant pressures and look for any signs of a leak
• Clear and test the condensate drain
• Check electrical connections, controls and safety cut-outs
• Run a full performance test in BOTH heating and cooling modes

Why testing both modes matters now

That last point is the one that counts at this time of year. A summer-only check can happily pass a unit that then fails the first time it is asked to heat. Running a performance test in both heating and cooling modes confirms the system is ready for the season ahead, not the one that has just finished.

It also means any weak spot, a marginally low refrigerant charge or a sticky reversing valve, shows up on a mild autumn day rather than during the first hard frost. Servicing protects your warranty and your running costs

Manufacturer parts warranties on the systems we fit typically run 3 to 6 years on residential installs and 5 to 7 years on commercial ones, but almost all of them are conditional on the unit being serviced annually by a qualified engineer. There is a running-cost angle too. A clean, correctly charged unit holds much closer to that 3.5 to 4.5 COP, while a clogged, undercharged one tends to drift well below it, drawing more electricity for the same warmth. Across a full Staffordshire winter, that gap in efficiency can add up, which is another reason a service ahead of the heating season tends to pay for itself.

Commercial sites: PPM contracts and F-Gas compliance

For offices, shops, server rooms and other commercial premises, a one-off service is only part of the picture. A Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) contract, six-monthly or annual with agreed service levels, keeps every unit on a documented schedule, offers discounted parts, and gives PPM customers priority attention, typically same-day or next-morning, if something does go wrong.
