Can Air Conditioning Heat Your Home in Winter? What Stoke Homeowners Should Know

If you have ever stood under an air conditioning unit in July and wondered whether the same box could keep you warm in January, you are asking exactly the right question. It is one we hear often from homeowners across Stoke-on-Trent and the wider Staffordshire area — usually the moment a tired gas boiler starts making expensive noises.

The short answer is yes. A modern air conditioning unit is not just a cooler; it is a two-way heat pump, and for the right room it can be a genuinely capable heat source. Here is how that works, where it makes sense, and — just as importantly — where it does not.

Yes — every modern split is a reverse-cycle heat pump

Every unit we fit is a reverse-cycle heat pump. That means the same wall-mounted indoor unit and outdoor condenser that cool your home in summer will run in reverse to heat it in winter — no second appliance, no separate install, just a different setting on the remote.

In heating mode a well-specified system delivers warmth down to around −15 °C outside, with a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of roughly 3.5–4.5. In plain terms, that is about 3.5 to 4.5 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity it draws — though the real-world figure always depends on the outdoor temperature, the unit and how the room is used.

How heat-pump heating differs from a gas boiler

A gas boiler burns fuel to make heat. A heat pump does something cleverer: it moves heat that already exists in the outside air and concentrates it indoors. Even on a cold day there is usable warmth in the air, and the refrigerant cycle inside the unit gathers it and releases it into the room.

Because it is moving heat rather than creating it from scratch, a heat pump can give back more energy as warmth than it consumes as electricity — that is what a COP in the 3.5–4.5 range describes. A gas boiler can never return more than the fuel you put in. The trade-off is that AC heating warms the air directly rather than heating water for radiators, which changes how, and where, it works best.

What about a cold British winter?

This is the question every Staffordshire homeowner asks, and fairly so. Older heat pumps had a reputation for wilting in the cold. Modern R32 systems are a different animal: the units we install are rated to keep heating down to around −15 °C, which comfortably covers a typical Stoke winter.

Output does taper as the temperature falls, and efficiency eases back from the top of that COP range on the very coldest nights — that is simply physics, and any honest installer will tell you the same. For the vast majority of days our region actually sees, a properly sized unit will keep a room warm without breaking stride.

Running costs — the honest version

This is where careful wording matters. At current electricity and gas unit rates, a reverse-cycle heat pump is cheaper to run than a gas boiler in most homes, precisely because of that 3.5–4.5 COP — you buy one unit of electricity and get several units of heat back.

But 'most homes' is doing real work in that sentence. Energy prices move, tariffs differ, and a draughty, poorly insulated room will always cost more to heat than a snug one. We would rather set that expectation honestly than promise a figure we cannot stand behind. What we can say plainly is that heating a single room with one efficient unit is often far cheaper than firing the whole central-heating system just to warm one space.

Which rooms and homes suit it best

Air conditioning heating is at its best when you want to warm one space quickly without heating the entire house. The rooms it suits most often are:

  • Bedrooms — gentle, controllable warmth exactly when you want it, plus cooling in summer from the same unit
  • Home offices — heat one room through the working day instead of the whole house
  • Extensions and garden rooms — spaces the existing wet system was never sized to reach
  • Loft conversions and rooms above garages — often the coldest, hardest corners of a house
  • Any poorly heated room where a radiator has always struggled to keep up

The honest limits (including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme)

A couple of things we always make clear before anyone commits. First, this is air-to-air heating: it warms the air in the room, it does not heat water for your radiators or your taps. It supplements or replaces heating room by room — it is not a like-for-like swap for a whole-house wet central-heating system. To hold that efficiency over the years, a heat pump does want an annual service and check-up, same as any heating appliance.

Second, and importantly: air-to-air heat pumps do not qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. That grant applies to air-to-water and ground-source systems only, so be wary of anyone implying otherwise — you would rather hear it straight from us.
